Self Help Debt Reduction

Self Help Debt Reduction

Very few people in this world rarely face financial trouble at some point in their life. Whether a financial crisis is caused by personal or family illness, the loss of a job, or overspending, it is indeed a crisis. But the good news is that it can be overcome. The situation does not have to get any worse!

Before turning to anything or anyone else for help, try the self help debt reduction method. This means, to first try to overcome the problem on your own.

1. Developing a budget is the first step in self help debt reduction. Realistically assess if you are spending more than you earn. First, list all your sources of income. Then list which expenses are fixed each month, for example rent, car payments, and mortgages. Then determine which expenses vary. These can be shopping expenses, entertainment expenses, and so on. Try to cut down on the variable expenses. Try to make ends meet with the basics, i.e. food, shelter, clothing, and so on, but cut down on entertainment, and unnecessary shopping.

2. Speak with relatives and friends, see if they are able to assist with interest free loans or even gifts at a time you are in crisis, use their money if possible to pay off some debts and to therefore help yourself toreduce debt.

3. How much junk have you got around your house. What items could you sell at a car boot sale or on ebay. Consider whether you have any valuable items which could be sold therefore bringing more money into the pot to pay off your debts.

4. Can you advertise for a lodger to share your home, making part payment towards your household bills and mortgage or rent. This is a an excellent way to bring in much needed cash and to help your debt reduction.

5. Even if you are making the payments and it is getting difficult contact the creditors, see if they will grant you a payment holiday, or extend your loan slightly to reduce the payment. Beware that this will extend the agreement contract and increase the debt but could help you raise enough cash to pay off other debts quickly.

6. Mortgage lenders are not wanting to take possession of your home, they prefer to work with you to help you pay off your debt, taking possession of your house is a final act and one that they wish to avoid. Contact your lender, explain the self help debt reduction methods you are considering, agree a payment holiday on your mortgage or debt consolidation. Some lenders may decrease or postpone your payments for a short period of time. Other lenders may consent to modify the terms of the mortgage by extending the repayment period to decrease your monthly obligation.

7. You could consider down sizing your house and oving, using any profits from the sale to pay off your debt.

These are just a number of self help debt reduction methods that can be considered and there are many more, if you are in debt dont worry unnecessarily, there are others like you and their are organisations and people who can help.
